An Open Letter to our Premier
Dear Honourable Mr Houston,
I’m not sure if you’re getting the message but thousands of Nova Scotians are fed up. We’re fed up with the fact that uncaring individuals across this province have easy access to recreational explosives and that they’re using them regularly in spite of the harm they cause. We’re fed up that they’re torturing veterans with PTSD and others with neurodivergent conditions. We’re fed up with the terror they’re causing to our pets, livestock and wildlife. We’re fed up with seeing our air and water polluted by toxic chemicals used to make the pretty colours. We’re fed up with the potential risk of fires and personal injury. Frankly, we’re fed up with the fact that an ignorant neighbour can torture an entire neighbourhood and get away with it!
As you may know, the Nova Scotia government repealed the Fireworks Safety Act in 2002. This happened just months after China was admitted into the World Trade Organization. Since that time the amount of Chinese manufactured fireworks imported into Canada - and our province - has increased exponentially. Did our government intentionally revoke legislation designed to protect Nova Scotians to favour trade with China?
Many parts of Nova Scotia are experiencing fireworks events on a regular basis in spite of toothless municipal noise bylaws. How bad does it have to get before you take action? What will it take for you to listen to our pleas for you to DO SOMETHING?
Is business with Chinese fireworks tycoons more important than the welfare of your province?
I respectfully ask that you make the sale, possession and use of recreational explosives illegal in Nova Scotia.
Thank you.
Regards,
Hugh Chisholm, DVM (retired)

P.S. I have plenty of information I’d be happy to share with you to substantiate the claims made in this letter.
